You’re right in that point. I guess I was just getting sick of all the reactions from other people - “Makulit kasi…ayan tuloy”, “Di kasi nag-iingat…”. Biktima ka na nga, ikaw pa may kasalanan. Parang walang difference sa mga reactions ng ibang tao tuwing may aktibistang nadadakip - “Nag-aktibista pa kasi…”, or pag may babaeng nare-rape - “Lasing kase…”, “Malandi kase…”, “Ang sexy kasi ng suot…”

Nakakainis lang.

Thanks for the comment. The information that Cocoy gave me regarding their trip to Maimbung indicates for me a grave miscalculation on Drilon and Dinampo’s part. True, we have yet to get to the bottom of the story. I trust Cocoy and based my views on the info that he gave. I may be wrong, of course.

Yes, we were lucky. But with the support from the people we were getting for our mission, I think we had a much better chance of being lucky than Ces and co. had. It really was as heartwarming an experience as it was nerve-wracking. Alam mong delikado ka sa lugar dahil di ka tagaroon, pero sa kabilang banda tiwala ka sa mga taong kumukupkop sa ‘yo, at tiwala sila sa ‘yo kasi ang pakay mo hindi lang simpleng kumuha ng istorya.

I don’t have reason to doubt that Ces had nothing but good intentions coming into Sulu. Ang diperensiya lang, palagay ko, sa pagpunta nila at pagpunta namin, ay ang pagtanggap ng mga tagaroon. Palagay ko, mas bulnerable ka kung may duda ang mga tao sa iyo. Yes, luck may have had some part in it (what if tinamaan kami sa strafing na ginawa ng militar noong nandun kami?). Pero if you’re Ces Drilon and you go to Sulu, di mo maiiwasang tingnan ka ng mga tao at iisiping “baka kumita ako dito” kaysa “baka makatulong ito sa amin”. Ganoon kasinikal na ang mga tao doon — and understandably so, because of the way media have covered them throughout the years.

It’s not that Prof. Dinampo or Ces Drilon should have known better (both are quite familiar with Sulu). Bad things happen. Especially when people are out to seek the truth. I would rather trust Dinampo (who I’ve met personally as well, here and in Sulu) and Drilon’s capabilities in making sure that they would eliminate as much danger as possible. In reality, there really is no guarantee. You were lucky. I was lucky too when my friend and I went to Sulu to shoot a documentary. Maybe we should stop all speculations - they should’ve done this, they should’ve done that - and accuse people of grave miscalculations when we haven’t really gotten to the bottom of the story.
