The Photographer as Activist

Here is a looong video of a talk by Brazilian photojournalist Sebastiao Salgado and his photo editor Fred Ritchin, about Salgado’s work, his intentions and objectives, and the methods of integrating with the subjects of his photos. Although he denies that he is an activist — in the sense that NGO workers and relief aid workers and funding agencies in the US considered themselves activist but nevertheless inhabit a world far too distant from the subject of their activism, like Africa, for example — he describes himself to be just that. More than being mere chroniclers of social problems, embedded in his work, he says, are the solutions to the very problems of society that he photographs.
